On Monday, a ship filled with passengers sank near the coast of Madagascar which claimed at least 85 lives and only 50 had been rescued.

The wooden vessel was identified by the name of ”Francia” the vessel was providing illegal transportation for 138 passengers, as per Madagascar’s Maritime and River Ports Agency. The vessel had left an unofficial port in a village of Antanambe and was headed for Soanierana Ivongo, a coastwise journey of about 35 miles across the island’s northeastern coast.

The vessel had leaked an engine room, which caused flooding that disabled the engines the agency director Jean Edmond Randrianantenaina told the AP. The vessel began sinking and the agency sent rescue vessels at around 9:00 am on Monday to assist.
