Authorities arrested two Crystal Cruises ships, the Crystal Symphony and Serenity after they arrived in Freeport yesterday evening.
According to one crew member, the ships anchored alongside in Freeport yesterday morning, and local officials entered the ships last night at 8 p.m. to arrest it.
After a US judge issued an arrest warrant to seize the Crystal Symphony as part of a lawsuit over $4.6 million in unpaid fuel costs, the Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity were diverted to the Bahamian island of Bimini.
Following the arrests, the captain of the Crystal Symphony made an announcement over the ship’s PA system, saying:
“The ship has been placed under arrest by the local authorities over some unpaid bills, and as it bad as it sounds it’s actually a good thing that happen. We’ve been told that this will not affect any personnel movement. So the crew movement and crew sign off’s will go as planned, and we are in process of preparing this. So this is unfortunate news but this was quite expected.”
A Miami-based judge issued an arrest warrant for the Crystal Symphony in late January, alleging unpaid bills from a fuel provider. Since then, the ship has not docked in the United States.
