At around 0330 Tokyo time on May 14, the general cargo ship MEISEN 2 developed a strong starboard list and issued a distress signal in Chiba Prefecture waters off Honshu’s eastern coast, south of Tokyo. The ship was sailing in a southwesterly direction from Hitachinaka.

Five crew members entered the life raft and were rescued; two of them were injured. According to the video, MEISEN 2 capsized and landed starboard on the bottom. To avoid sinking, the ship was most likely purposefully stranded in shallow waters close to shore.
