A general cargo barge collided with a ferry crossing the Shitalakkhya River in Bangladesh, killing six people and leaving up to 20 more missing.
The Rupshi-9 general cargo ship was arrested by river police yesterday, but the master had left by the time the authorities arrived.
The ship’s bow rammed the Afsar Uddin ferry for 500 meters before sinking the small passenger vessel, with passengers jumping into the river to avoid being run over by the cargo ship. When the ferry collided, it was carrying more than 50 passengers.
After colliding with another vessel, a ferry sank near Dhaka in June of last year, killing at least 32 people.
