This stunning footage captures the rescue of a young dolphin after he was washed up on a beach. The marine mammal found on a Namibian shore was given a hand in restoring his health.
Pelican Point Kayaking tour guide Naude Drake spotted the animal and leaped into action, gently picking it up and sending it back to the sea. This video was posted to Pelican Point Kayaking’s Facebook page and was viewed more than three million times in 18 hours.
They wrote, “On our way back from tour this morning, we came across this juvenile male Benguela Dolphin, still alive on the beach.
“It’s not clear how he ended up on there in the first place. After a quick assessment and measurements, I attempted to get him swimming again.
“I was not very hopeful, but as soon as he got into water and realised where he was, he took off like a bullet.”
They also said they would continue driving past the area to check if the youngsters hadn’t returned. Although the rescue is successful, it does not go against Whales and Dolphin Conservation advice regarding how to treat an animal if one is found.
They recommend that you contact them or other experts.
“Marine mammals are wild. They can carry diseases which are transferable to humans, and they can cause injury by thrashing their tails or otherwise. Do not put yourself at risk of injury.
“Approach with care – if in doubt just wait for help – the most important thing you can do to help is to let the experts know.”
