Jason Skidgel has always loved dogs a lot, so when he saw a dog fall into a frozen lake after chasing some geese, he didn’t hesitate to do whatever it took to get the dog to safety.

With seconds, Skidgel was running through the cold water to save Loki, the dog. People on the beach were all holding their breath, hoping that Skidgel and Loki would soon be back on land. Skidgel broke through the ice with his hands and body and got to where Loki was treading water. He then grabbed the dog, who was freezing, and the two of them swam back to shore together.
As soon as Skidgel got out of the water, everyone ran to him and did whatever they could to help him get warm again. Loki also tried to help. He kept trying to go over and check on the person who saved him to make sure he was OK.
People took off their shirts and coats and gave them to Skidgel. They also made covers out of anything they could find. Skidgel was cold and scared, but all that really mattered was that he and Loki were back on land.

“I may have saved Loki’s life, but they saved mine,” Skidgel said on Instagram.
Skidgel did everything he could to help Loki, even though Loki wasn’t his dog. That’s what dog people do.
