In the evening of December 8, a Vietnamese 24-year-old seaman killed the ship’s captain in Korean waters. When the ship was sailing from Vietnam to the Korean city of Pyeongtaek.
According to reports, the seaman drank several shots of whiskey in his cabin before going to the bridge and stabbing Captain, a 44-year-old Chinese national, multiple times. The ship arrived in Pyeongtaek early on December 9th, and the seaman was arrested right away.
An investigation is underway. According to his preliminary statement, he killed Captain because “Captain made his life unbearable” – which might very well be the case, especially during “pandemic” moments when signing off the ship is extremely difficult. The crew of 19 consists of 17 Vietnamese and 2 Chinese nationalities.
