The years 2020 and 2021 have not been kind enough to cruise ships that are showing their age. In the last two years, many cruise ships from Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean have been scrapped, and we can now add one more to the list.
The former Costa Romantica has been beached in Pakistan’s Gadani Ship Breaking Yard for scrapping.
Metal from the ship will be repurposed for other purposes, mostly in building, while fittings, technical components, and other assets will be sold.
Celestyal Cruises was the ship’s most recent owner, having purchased it from Costa, where it had previously sailed as the neoRomantica pre-COVID. Celestyal purchased the ship in 2020, but it was never used and was subsequently sold for financial reasons.
The 1,800-guest ship had 789 cabins, 132 of which had balconies, and was built in 1993 and significantly refurbished in 2012 for a total cost of 95 million euros.
