Christopher Swann, a British photographer, has captured a captivating event that takes place underwater – the hunting of a school of mackerel by sharks and dolphins.

We often don’t think about how animals protect themselves and hunt for food, but Swann’s images offer us a glimpse into the lives of these creatures off the coast of the Azores.

In an effort to protect themselves, the mackerel come together to form a massive, silvery ball. The photos show thousands of fish tightly grouped together, with a diameter of around 30 feet.

Unfortunately, the predators come from all sides – the deep end is attacked by sharks and dolphins, while Cory’s shearwaters swoop in from above to snatch fish nearer the surface.
